But then the picks went on a run and the last six were correct to finish at 10-6. I'll take it. The only extra-inning game went the wrong way of course. But his last four of five starts have been very good and he has won his last two decisions. I think the guy is going to be a star. Bad pitchers are like bad boyfriends

<div style="text-align: justify;">The first day of my senior year in high school provided a shock. With my head on the desk in homeroom, attendance was being called and the name, Felicia Rivera, rang out. I suddenly lifted my head. That was the name of my first boy-crush in the sixth grade. I looked around and spotted this raven-haired beauty wearing a mini-dress in the back of the room. It was her but all grown up. I caught her after homeroom and indeed, it was the same girl who had moved away to Florida a week after I gave her an ID bracelet. Unfortunately, since she moved back, she had already found a boyfriend.</div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">Still, I got to know her and got her a job where I worked. She did not have a car, so every day after school, I stopped at her house so she could get dressed and then I took her to work with me. She told me stories about how cruel her boyfriend was to her. I tried to convince her to take up with me instead and she always laughed and said I was too nice.</div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">That pattern has gone on probably forever. Young girls are drawn to bad guys. The rogues with the leather coats with the shady criminal records. Nice guys finish last. This might be in part because of some motherly instinct that believes with a lot of love, the bad boy can change. Some do, most do not. </div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">So what does that have to do with this being a baseball forum? Well...bad pitchers are a lot like bad boyfriends. Teams cannot help themselves and believe a bad pitcher can change. How else could you explain that within hours of each other the Phillies would sign <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=hernaro01,carmofa01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Roberto Hernandez</a></strong> and the Pirates would sign <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/volqued01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Edinson Volquez</a></strong>?</div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">And these two have been really bad pitchers. And like bad boyfriends, the teams that signed them think they can change what they are. Good luck with that.</div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Padres and Dodgers already tried with Volquez. Teams are tantalized by his one golden season when he came in fourth in Rookie of the Year voting in 2008. But then he was hurt much of 2009 and 2010 and when he was not hurt, he was awful. </div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Red eventually got very tired of him and he was a throw in for the big deal that sent <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/latosma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mat Latos</a></strong> to the Reds. The Padres thought they could fix Volquez. Plus, they had a much more favorable ballpark for him to pitch his home games.</div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">It did not work. After sixty starts with a 1.545 WHIP and a -1.5 rWAR, the Padres gave up and released him. Thinking they too could fix him, the Dodgers picked him up soon after...for a pennant race, no less. Volquez responded with an 0-2 record for the Dodgers in six starts. Yeah, that helped their cause. </div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">So now the Pirates waltzed over to the boy with the leather jacket and think they can change the guy who had the worst RA9-WAR in all of baseball last year. Volvquez has pitched parts of nine seasons in the Majors. He has pitched 850 innings. His career WHIP is 1.505. In all of those years and starts and innings, he has compiled 1.7 rWAR. Bad boys don't change, honey.</div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">Roberto Hernandez burst on the scene in 2007 as Fausto Carmona, a fake name with a fake age and who knows what else was fake about him. He won 19 games that season and earned a 6.2 rWAR. That was then, this is now. In that one season, he earned 6.2 rWAR, so you would figure his career WAR would be over that, right? Wrong. It sits at 4.7. That is a whole lot of ugly pitching in between.</div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Rays thought they could fix him. The Rays can fix anybody. Heck, they even made <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/loneyja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">James Loney</a></strong> look good. They could not fix Roberto Hernandez. On an otherwise winning team, he went 6-13. A ground ball specialist, he has one problem: Just about every non-ground ball goes over the fence. Granted, that might be fluky that a pitcher would have a 20% home run to fly ball rate.</div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">That could be what the Phillies are thinking. After all, Hernandez throws strikes and he throws them often. They can fix him! Good luck with that.</div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">But it has always been this way. Remember <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/ponsosi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Sidney Ponson</a></strong>? <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hugheph01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Phil Hughes</a></strong> found a home. Harang and Saunders will again too. Heck, the Minnesota Twins make a charity drive of such pitchers every year. Someone is always falling in love with the bad boy thinking he will change. They rarely do. Sometimes, bad is just bad.</div></div>

MLB Game Picks - Tuesday: July 30, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">The first five finals yesterday were correct. The last four were all incorrect. Such is the life of a baseball game picker. What are you going to do when <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chapmar01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Aroldis Chapman</a></strong> blows a save? Or when the Cubs were strapped for runs all game and then were <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stroppe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Pedro Strop</a></strong> -ped in the ninth? The Marlins' <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/turneja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jacob Turner</a></strong> left with a lead and his bullpen could not hold it. But the Game of the Day was wrong for the second day in a row. But then again, so has <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/villaca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Carlos Villanueva</a></strong>. So I will go with the pitcher who is supposedly better. Besides, the Cubs' bullpen is a mess.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Cardinals over the <b>Pirates</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lynnla01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Lance Lynn</a></strong> lifts the Cardinals out of their little losing streak in this first game of two today between these two contenders. I like Lynn's ability to shut down the Pirates better than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/burnea.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">A.J. Burnett</a></strong>'s chances to do the opposite.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Cardinals over the <b>Pirates</b></u>: I hate to rain of the Pirates parade here with a double-header sweep prediction. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lyonsty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tyler Lyons</a></strong> goes for the Cards. He has started six games for the Cards going back and forth between the minors. Half of them have been good outings. The Pirates have not yet announced their starting pitcher and that is not ever a good thing.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Indians</b> over the White Sox</u>: Is there nothing more entertaining in sports than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harreke01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ken Harrelson</a></strong> getting disappointed in the outcome of a game. All those sighs and resignation. His stuff has looked electric. A lot of teams are hitting on the Royals to ask about him. MLB Game Picks - Wednesday: July 3, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">There are two ways to look at yesterday. The first is that it was a bit of a letdown after doing so well on Monday. The second is that the day started at 0-4 and then was at 2-6 before pulling it out in the end to have a slightly positive day. I will have to sip more of my coffee before I decide if the glass is half empty or half full.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">It sure was a poor start. The Pirates certainly did not start <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lockeje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jeff Locke</a></strong>. Instead, they started <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cumptbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Brandon Cumpton</a></strong>. And yeah, I would have thought twice about that pick. Then, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/strasst01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Stephen Strasburg</a></strong> threw seven scoreless innings, but so did <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peralwi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Wily Peralta</a></strong> and the Brewers eventually won. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wangch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chien-Ming Wang</a></strong> was more of an emotional pick and not only did he not pitch well, but he was DFA'd after the game. Ouch. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hefneje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jeremy Hefner</a></strong> was terrific again and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/corbipa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Patrick Corbin</a></strong> lost his first game. The White Sox beat the Orioles. Seriously? And the Mariners blew up the Rangers. Weird.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But all hail <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/baileho02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Homer Bailey</a></strong> on his second career no-hitter. That pick started the comeback and it was great fun to watch. Thank you, MLB.tv!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Wednesday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Nationals </b>over the Brewers</u>: Since Strasburg is not pitching, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/detwiro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ross Detwiler</a></strong> is, the Nats will score a bunch of runs. Look for Harper to do some damage to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lohseky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Kyle Lohse</a></strong>. Let's put it this way: If the Nats lose again, then they may not have a magical run in them that I expect.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Pirates </b>over the Phillies:</u> Okay, today Jeff Locke is pitching. Do we have that straight now? I have had good success picking Locke all season. The Phillies go with John Lannon (Imagine there's no strikeouts, it isn't hard to do).</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Tigers over the <b>Blue Jays</b>:</u> It is getting to critical mass now with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/scherma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Max Scherzer</a></strong>. How long can the streak last. That is the question with every pick each time he starts. He has a tough opponent in <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=johnsjo09,johnso012jos,johnso011jos&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Josh Johnson</a></strong> and a tough lineup in the Blue Jays. You have to pick him until he loses, right?</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Mets </b>over the Diamondbacks:</u> The D-backs sure don't feel like a first place club, do they? I cannot imagine a first place team running <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/delgara01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Randall Delgado</a></strong> out there again and again. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harvema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Harvey</a></strong> goes for the Mets and this game is featured on ESPN. Harvey is my first half <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/youngcy01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Cy Young</a></strong> Award winner in the NL.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Orioles over the <b>White Sox</b>:</u> We will find out how well <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/feldmsc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Feldman</a></strong> does with the Orioles. They are not wasting any time starting him. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santihe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Hector Santiago</a></strong> goes for the White Sox and is a fly ball pitcher. A fly ball pitcher does not seem like a good recipe against the powerful Orioles.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Braves </b>over the Marlins:</u> I am afraid to pick the Marlins and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nolasri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ricky Nolasco</a></strong> because he might be traded before the game even starts. Besides, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/minormi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mike Minor</a></strong> should beat them anyway.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Reds </b>over the Giants:</u> Man, the Giants are struggling. And being no-hit is like the ultimate ouchie. Having <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zitoba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Barry Zito</a></strong> pitch does not seem to be good timing after that either. Plus, they face <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cingrto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tony Cingrani</a></strong>, who has struck out 57 batters in 47+ innings. The one silver-lining for the Giants is that their lineup, such as it is, is set up well for lefties.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Rangers over the <b>Mariners</b>:</u> It would make baseball sense for the Mariners to win with Saunders on the mound and lose with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hernafe02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Felix Hernandez</a></strong> pitching, right? Besides, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hollade01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Derek Holland</a></strong> has pitched five times at Safeco Field and has never lost there and has a 0.68 ERA. I think he likes it there.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Indians over the <b>Royals</b>:</u> Everything the Indians have done makes little sense, so losing with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kazmisc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Kazmir</a></strong> just goes with the flow. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santaca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Carlos Santana</a></strong> walked three times yesterday and then did a guitar solo.  How can you lose with Santana and Led Zeppelin? <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/guthrje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jeremy Guthrie</a></strong> gets a hard luck loss for the Royals.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Dodgers over the <b>Rockies</b>:</u> The Dodgers are rolling now. If I was the NL West, I would be pretty nervous. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greinza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Zack Greinke</a></strong> will give them a decent six innings. Walters</a></strong> will not help the cause. But he might be traded any time now. So I pick him and some minor league pitcher pitches like yesterday. Going with <strike>Shrek</strike> <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colonba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bartolo Colon</a></strong> seems safer.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Angels </b>over the Cardinals:</u> The Cards are going through a flat period. Their timely hitting with runners in scoring position is regressing to the mean a bit and their starting pitchers all seem to have one bad inning that deflates them. Plus, the Angels are playing well and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/willije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jerome Williams</a></strong> has been terrific.
