MLB Game Picks - Friday: September 5, 2014

When I looked at my picks this morning, my first thought was: "Why in the world would I have picked the Texas Rangers!?" Yes, exactly. I love how they have been pitching and how they have been fearless in bringing up young players. The Giants will get to put the Panda at DH and get an extra bat. There is the expectation that he will be great for one game out of four. But which one? Great America Ballpark doesn't seem like the obvious choice. <div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I needed a good day yesterday after a horrible Thursday and I got it. There were only four incorrect picks. The Yankees were bombed out at home. The Orioles could do nothing with a very impressive <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/ventuyo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Yordano Ventura</a></strong>. The White Sox got a walk-off grand slam from Abreu to ruin that pick. And <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/collmjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Josh Collmenter</a></strong> pitched a lot better than I thought he would as the Diamondbacks won the team's third straight.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Those were the only four bad picks. But I will take eleven correct ones every day. Wilson</a></strong> and the Yankees should get some base runners at least. The only question is about how good <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nunovi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Vidal Nuno</a></strong> can be. He was good his first start, but we'll see.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Nationals</strong> over the Padres</span>: This is a tough one. I love <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cashnan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Andrew Cashner</a></strong>, but his ERA is double on the road as it is at home. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/roarkta01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Tanner Roark</a></strong> has been good his last two starts. I am going with the home team.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Blue Jays</strong> over the Red Sox</span>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/buchhcl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Clay Buchholz</a></strong> has been horrible. If he fixes himself today, this pick is in deep doodoo. Then again, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morrobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Brandon Morrow</a></strong> hasn't been reliable himself. This looks like a pick that could hurt.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Tigers over the <strong>Twins</strong></span>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hugheph01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Phil Hughes</a></strong> pitched well his last time out. But this is the Tigers and they bite. Then again, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sanchan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Anibal Sanchez</a></strong> has not been great so far this season either.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Indians over the <strong>Giants</strong></span>: The Giants aren't hitting much and need good pitching to win. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong> cannot be trusted in that department. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcallza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Zach McAllister</a></strong>, on the other hand, is a bright talent.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Pirates</strong> over the Cardinals</span>: Ugh, this is a tough one. Neither team is hitting. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Francisco Liriano</a></strong> has not been nearly as good as last year. But <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lyonsty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Tyler Lyons</a></strong> is not a good pick either. Tough one...again...</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Orioles</strong> over the Royals</span>: I feel the Orioles are going to destroy <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/guthrje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Jeremy Guthrie</a></strong> today. It's a gut thing. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chenwe02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Wei-Yin Chen</a></strong> has to be good for the Orioles though.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Brewers</strong> over the Cubs</span>: I hate picking against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/woodtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Travis Wood</a></strong>. I have a lot of respect for him to go out there and get no support each time. He might even be the best hitter on his team. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/estrama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Marco Estrada</a></strong> will be good enough to win at home.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Braves</strong> over the Reds</span>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/haleda02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">David Hale</a></strong> is the weakest link of the Braves' rotation. But he still might be good enough to be better than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leakemi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Mike Leake</a></strong>. Leake is not a big strikeout guy, which helps the Braves.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Mets</strong> over the Marlins</span>: When it comes to pitchers, there is slow, then <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sloweke01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Kevin Slowey</a></strong> and then the slowest. And <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ramosce01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Cesar Ramos</a></strong> pitching for the Rays seals the deal for me.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Phillies over the <strong>Diamondbacks</strong></span>: I am not sure about <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=leecl02,leecl01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Cliff Lee</a></strong> in the desert air, but I am sure that I don't ever like picking <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/arroybr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Bronson Arroyo</a></strong> to win.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Rockies over the <strong>Dodgers</strong></span>: I like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nicasju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Juan Nicasio</a></strong> on the road and at home. But maybe I overrate him. There were some really good picks like the Cubs (and Feldman) over the White Sox, the Indians (and Masterson) over the Reds and the Twins over the Brewers. So far, I only have one home team in the win column. Ugh. But I still think <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/baileho02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Homer Bailey</a></strong> is more reliable than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kazmisc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Kazmir</a></strong>. And that is how the pick has to go.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Pirates </b>over the Tigers</u>: I have gone with the Tigers every day and the Pirates have won two of them. And I never quite believe in <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lockeje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jeff Locke</a></strong> despite his 5-1 record, great WHIP and ERA. So I will switch it up and go that way and hope that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fistedo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Doug Fister</a></strong> does not have one of his <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/maddugr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Greg Maddux</a></strong> days.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Yankees </b>over the Mets</u>: The Yankees have lost four in a row. And that streak depends on a good outing from <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nunovi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Vidal Nuno</a></strong> to get them out if it. The bullpen because of Phelps' short outing is already gassed. Yikes! Fortunately, they get <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/geedi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Dillon Gee</a></strong> who is quite capable of giving them five or six runs.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Nationals over the <b>Orioles</b></u>: This series is crazy. Between the two team, they hit eight homers yesterday. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=davisch02,davis-008chr&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Davis</a></strong> has been out of his mind. So who will restore order today? Will it be <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harenda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Dan Haren</a></strong> or <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=garcifr03,garcifr01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Freddy Garcia</a></strong>? Not that great a choice, right? The Marlins go with their best pitcher, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nolasri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ricky Nolasco</a></strong>. But that does not mean the Marlins will win. Just that they have a chance.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Braves </b>over the Blue Jays</u>: The Blue Jays have had their way thus far. But <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/minormi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mike Minor</a></strong> should be better than who the Jays have faced so far. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dicker.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">R.A. Dickey</a></strong>, on the other hand, could have his knuckler dancing and strike out twelve Braves. <div style="text-align: justify;">Picking baseball games is a humbling thing. I was celebrating two mornings ago to one of the best days of picking ever. And since then, the picks have gone 13-17. That's the way it goes it seems. You cannot predict that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/feldmsc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Feldman</a></strong> would throw a gem and that the Nationals bullpen would blow the game at the same time. You cannot predict that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dempsry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ryan Dempster</a></strong> would yield three homers and his bullpen two more. You cannot predict that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/arroybr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bronson Arroyo</a></strong> would not allow any homers in a game. It is just baseball and that is the beauty of it all.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are eleven games on the schedule due to a make-up double-header between the Yankees and the Indians. And it is an old fashioned double-header with one game right after the other. That is kind of cool--totally difficult to predict. But cool.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Monday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Indians </b>over the Yankees</u>: The first game of the double-header seems to give the Indians a slight advantage with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/masteju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Masterson</a></strong> pitching at home against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/phelpda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">David Phelps</a></strong>. Phelps is pretty decent, but the Indians are hitting well these days and just had a big series against the Tigers.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Yankees over the <b>Indians</b></u>: The truth is that anything can happen in these two games. Either team could sweep depending on the bullpens, the line-ups and how well young starters do in a special chance to shine. The latter is the case as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nunovi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Vidal Nuno</a></strong> gets his first start for the Yankees and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bauertr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Trevor Bauer</a></strong> goes for the Indians. This Yankees lineup is not the same patient lineup as the regulars who are all on the DL. Bauer's biggest problem is control. Can this Yankees' makeshift lineup be patient enough to wait Bauer out? How well will Nuno do? Who knows.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Pirates </b>over the Brewers</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/burnea.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">A.J. Burnett</a></strong> is pitching really, really well. But he gets no support from the Pirates when he pitches. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/estrama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Marco Estrada</a></strong> is a serviceable pitcher, just nothing spectacular. The Pirates' lineup has to help AJ out.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Tigers </b>over the Astros</u>: It seems the Astros always play the best teams in the American League. That is kind of unfair with their young and inexperienced roster. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/norribu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bud Norris</a></strong>, if he is on, gives the Astros a fighting chance. But <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sanchan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Anibal Sanchez</a></strong> should get the win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>C</b><b>ubs </b>over the Rockies</u>: The Rockies have really hit the skids lately. The Cubs are playing decent ball. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/woodtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Travis Wood</a></strong> over <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nicasju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Juan Nicasio</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The White Sox over the <b>Twins</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santihe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Hector Santiago</a></strong> is quietly putting together a good start to his season. His K/BB ratio is over three and he is striking out nearly a batter an inning. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=hernape02,hernape01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Pedro Hernandez</a></strong> is your typical Twins' pitcher who will need the BABIP gods to win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Diamondbacks </b>over the Braves</u>: The Braves are such an all or nothing club. They will either club you to death or strike out a dozen times. The pitching is what saved them last year and does not appear to be as strong this year. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/minormi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mike Minor</a></strong> will try to reverse that. But I think he will be out-pitched by <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mileywa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Wade Miley</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Angels </b>over the Royals</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/blantjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Joe Blanton</a></strong> is 0-6. Something has to give there. The Angels were one-hit yesterday by <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/salech01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Sale</a></strong> and will be frothing to hit <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mendolu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Luis Mendoza</a></strong>. These are two very unpredictable teams.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Athletics </b>over the Rangers</u>: The A's have fallen on hard times and are now below .500. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/griffaj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">A.J. Griffin</a></strong> makes the Yankees look silly but has been ordinary every other time out. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grimmju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Grimm</a></strong> is still feeling his way. The Rangers have opened such a large lead in the division that the A's have to sweep to stay in the same zip code.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Nationals over the <b>Dodgers</b></u>: The Dodgers had a good weekend at the Marlins' expense. The Nats continue to disappoint. But <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zimmejo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jordan Zimmermann</a></strong> has not disappointed anyone. He is the man. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beckejo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Josh Beckett</a></strong> used to be the man.
