MLB Game Picks - Thursday: July 31, 2014

There are two more to go and some of it will be determined by last minute deals that happen today. As always, some fan bases will be happy and some will be disappointed.</span></div><div style="color: #444444; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Speaking of disappointing, the picking day ended under .500 yesterday. The Game of the Day worked out okay, but little else did. The Kluber / Hernandez match-up could have gone either way, so that's okay. But sometimes teams lose to teams they shouldn't lose to and it's the old saw about on any given day, any one team can beat another. It's probably a tie. There has been a lot of talk about <strong style="color: black; line-height: 1.5;"><a data-mce-href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/millesh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/millesh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" style="color: #743399; line-height: 1.5;" target="_blank">Shelby Miller</a></strong> and his disappointing season. They just keep on winning and winning and winning. Remember all that Buster Olney talk about their tough schedule after the All Star Break? <div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Buenos Cinco de Mayo amigos! Sunday was a struggle all day and when all the day games finished, the picks were sitting at 7-7. A positive (though not very good) result depended on the Cardinals beating the Cubs on Sunday Night Baseball which translates to: "Way too late to be well rested on a Monday morning."</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Remember, I had picked the Cardinals for the past two days and the Cubs had won them both. I picked the Cards again on Sunday, so I wasn't in a good situation. I felt better after the Cards took a 3-0 lead and held it to the bottom of the fourth when Lynn gave up two runs to make it 3-2.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">When the Cardinals brought in <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=martica04,martica03,martica02,martin015car,martin019car&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Carlos Martinez</a></strong> in the seventh, I knew he was going to screw up because he is on my fantasy team. And he did. But somehow the Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the ninth, held on through a scare in the bottom of the ninth and won by a run. Whew! I finished over .500!</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Speaking of over .500, have you noticed that every team in the NL East is over that mark? But <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zimmejo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Jordan Zimmermann</a></strong> is coming on strong and is pitching at home. Puig is banged up (again). I think the Nats take this one.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Indians</strong> over the Twins</span>: The Indians got their guts ripped out yesterday when their closer gave up three runs and blew the save. It ripped out my guts too. Ugh! <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcallza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Zach McAllister</a></strong> (shouldn't all the Zacks and Zachs get together and standardize?) will win. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gibsoky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Kyle Gibson</a></strong> has three great starts followed by two bad ones.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Pirates</strong> over the Giants</span>: Sometimes a win like yesterday's ninth inning walk-off can spur a team on. MLB.com lists TBO for both teams as to their pitchers. Yahoo.com lists either Petit or <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cainma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Matt Cain</a></strong> for the Giants and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lockeje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Jeff Locke</a></strong> for the Pirates. I think it will be Cain. And I like Jeff Locke coming up and getting a win.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Phillies</strong> over the Blue Jays</span>: I think the Phillies' players are keeping the team relevant just to keep from having the team broken up at the trade deadline. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kendrky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Kyle Kendrick</a></strong> doesn't thrill me, but neither does <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/happja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">J.A. Happ</a></strong>. The latter's lefty tosses might throw off the Phillies though.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Marlins</strong> over the Mets</span>: The Marlins' homestand is lasting forever. And that's how their opponents must feel as they do not seem to lose at home. The Yankees were bombed out at home. The Orioles could do nothing with a very impressive <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/ventuyo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Yordano Ventura</a></strong>. The White Sox got a walk-off grand slam from Abreu to ruin that pick. And <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/collmjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Josh Collmenter</a></strong> pitched a lot better than I thought he would as the Diamondbacks won the team's third straight.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Those were the only four bad picks. But I will take eleven correct ones every day. If he fixes himself today, this pick is in deep doodoo. Then again, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morrobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Brandon Morrow</a></strong> hasn't been reliable himself. This looks like a pick that could hurt.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Tigers over the <strong>Twins</strong></span>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hugheph01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Phil Hughes</a></strong> pitched well his last time out. But this is the Tigers and they bite. Neither team is hitting. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Francisco Liriano</a></strong> has not been nearly as good as last year. But <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lyonsty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Tyler Lyons</a></strong> is not a good pick either. Tough one...again...</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Orioles</strong> over the Royals</span>: I feel the Orioles are going to destroy <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/guthrje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Jeremy Guthrie</a></strong> today. It's a gut thing. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chenwe02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Wei-Yin Chen</a></strong> has to be good for the Orioles though.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Brewers</strong> over the Cubs</span>: I hate picking against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/woodtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Travis Wood</a></strong>. I have a lot of respect for him to go out there and get no support each time. He might even be the best hitter on his team. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/estrama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">Marco Estrada</a></strong> will be good enough to win at home.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The <strong>Braves</strong> over the Reds</span>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/haleda02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.flagrantfan.com" target="_blank">David Hale</a></strong> is the weakest link of the Braves' rotation. Of the five incorrect picks, the Pirates and Reds losing were the most surprising. The Rockies were just a stupid pick. The Braves lost to the Brewers but they did defend the integrity of the game (oh brother). But the Rays are going to keep winning. The guy just knows how to pitch. Johnny Helwig, on the other hand, has a WHIP so far in his young career of 2.25. Ouch.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Braves </b>over the Phillies</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/haleda02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">David Hale</a></strong> makes his second Major League start for the Braves. How did I miss his first one? Must have been in a blind spot. Anyway, his performance in that first start was so out of character with his minor league numbers (never struck out so many batters) that I had to blink a little bit. But he should still be better than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cloydty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tyler Cloyd</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Rangers </b>over the Angels</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garzama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Garza</a></strong> is the same as always. It's just a different team. He seems to have all this talent and at least a third of the time, just goes off the rails. He better be on tonight as the Rangers are still trying to hang on. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/willije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jerome Williams</a></strong> has been better of late. No love lost between these two teams.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Royals over the <b>White Sox</b></u>: The Royals are done as are the Yankees. The odds are less there. The Giants have to hit. MLB Game Picks - Friday: September 20, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">The great start to this picking week has stumbled in the last two days and I just broke even yesterday in the twelve games that were played. Congrats go to the Dodgers and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mattido01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Don Mattingly</a></strong> for clinching their division yesterday (even though I did not pick them to win) and no, I did not think it was classless to go for a dip in that pool. I think some panties are worn too tightly. And congrats to the Boston Red Sox for clinching the playoffs. They will clinch the division in short order. Going from 93 losses a season ago to 93 wins this season is quite the accomplishment.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This coming week is going to be even more difficult to pick games as clinched division winners will rest people and who knows what will happen then. Let's see if it affects today's Dodgers pick as we take a look at Friday:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Braves over the <b>Cubs</b></u>: The Braves want to get their own clinching done and will push forward until that happens. Then they won't have to hear about last year's collapse any more. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=bakersc02,bakersc01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Baker</a></strong> continues his comeback attempt with the Cubs and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/maholpa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Paul Maholm</a></strong> goes for the Braves (which is my only concern for this pick.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Pirates </b>over the Reds</u>: This game features a great, on-paper, pitching match-up as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/latosma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mat Latos</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Francisco Liriano</a></strong> go for their respective teams. Latos has seen his strikeout totals go down in his last four starts and his hits against go up. He may be tired. Liriano has been terrific.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Indians </b>over the Astros</u>: Would it not be something if <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/francte01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Terry Francona</a></strong> got his guys the wildcard and had to face the Red Sox in the playoffs? I really like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oberhbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Brett Oberholtzer</a></strong> but the Indians like lefties and should win behind <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcallza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Zach McAllister</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Nationals </b>over the Marlins</u>: If <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zimmejo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jordan Zimmermann</a></strong> wins this start and his last one next week, he could reach twenty wins for the season. Philadelphia doesn't have a much better offense than Miami's but enough to make a difference. Besides, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hamelco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Cole Hamels</a></strong> is pitching.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Yankees </b>over the Giants</u>: What a weird series to be taking place this late in the season. And the pitching match-up is full of angst as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sabatc.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">CC Sabathia</a></strong> goes against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong>. This game could go either way. If Girardi starts <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wellsve01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Vernon Wells</a></strong> again against a right-handed pitcher, forget it.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Bay <b>Rays </b>over the Orioles</u>: The Orioles go into a must game with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hammeja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jason Hammel</a></strong>. But surprise seems to be my middle name. MLB Game Picks - Sunday: September 15, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">At least Saturday finished in the black. Not by much, mind you, but in the black as the blahs continue in my picking odyssey. There are only two weeks left including this one. I cannot believe how it has all flown by so fast. And quite a bit will be decided in the next two weeks. And I should probably go with the Orioles. I have seen it a dozen times through the years. It is just a number. Can we put an end to that kind of talk. It is such a far-fetched thing. Interesting decision. I am not saying they should. I am just saying that it is interesting. That said, I do not expect him to go deep in the game. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/smithbu03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Burch Smith</a></strong> will not go deep in the game either for the Padres.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Angels over the <b>Astros</b></u>: Two teams playing out the string. Two pitchers that have had so-so seasons. Take your pick. The Indians have an OPS as a team that is fifty points higher against lefties. Does that cancel out Sale's greatness? While not a prospect, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=ramirer01,ramirer02&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Erasmo Ramirez</a></strong> has been hugely effective since he joined the rotation. So why am I picking against him? Because I don't think his teammates will hit <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/millesh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Shelby Miller</a></strong> either.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Athletics over the <b>Rangers</b></u>: Have the A's dismantled the Rangers or what? Picture the Rangers as the stereotypical cowboy staggering out of the frontier bar after getting his butt whooped. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/parkeja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jarrod Parker</a></strong> is 6-1 in his career against the Rangers. He is 2-1 with a decent ERA when in Arlington. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/perezma02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Martin Perez</a></strong> is the only thing standing in the way of an A's avalanche.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Rockies over the <b>Diamondbacks</b></u>: Perhaps it is luck and I would have to study it further, but <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chacijh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jhoulys Chacin</a></strong> has had a very good season and it has gone pretty much out of notice. I can feel it. The Giants have played the Dodgers very well over the last couple of games. Silly me. MLB Game Picks - Wednesday: September 4, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">The first two days of September were brutal and awful, but at least I picked the Game of the Day correctly. Yesterday was much better but the Game of the Day was wrong. Der. I thought sure the Orioles would beat the Indians. Where did <i>that </i><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jimenub01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ubaldo Jimenez</a></strong> come from? I called the Yankees - White Sox game dead on with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/salech01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Sale</a></strong> looking good early and then the Yankees winning it late. I also correctly called <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/baileho02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Homer Bailey</a></strong> over the Cardinals despite a good performance from <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wachami01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Michael Wacha</a></strong>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I will take solace in a much better day and know that to rescue this week, I will need more good days to pull it out of the mire. So here goes. Wednesday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Mets over the <b>Braves</b></u>: I am not quite sure why the Braves are starting <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/loeka01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Kameron Loe</a></strong> unless they have somehow fixed his flaws in a hurry since they obtained him. They have a huge lead in the division, so I guess no biggie. The pick then goes to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/geedi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Dillon Gee</a></strong> who has been stingy with runs lately.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Astros </b>over the Twins</u>: Yeah, this did not work out yesterday, but I do not quite believe in <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hendrli01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Liam Hendriks</a></strong> even if he did beat the Rangers his last time out. Looking at that game, it was truly a BABIP game with at-em balls. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lylesjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jordan Lyles</a></strong> is not a more savory pick, however.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Cubs </b>over the Marlins</u>: I went back and forth on this one. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=flynn-002bri&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Brian Flynn</a></strong> makes his MLB debut for the Marlins and had great numbers in the minors this season. It looks like he can go deep into games too. The flipper for me was that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/samarje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jeff Samardzija</a></strong> should strike out ten Marlins today.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Rangers over the <b>Athletics</b></u>: Every single time I have picked <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/darviyu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Yu Darvish</a></strong> to win, he has not. And he has had some trouble with the A's before. But come on now. The guy is a beast and should win every game he pitches. Perhaps <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/parkeja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jarrod Parker</a></strong> will have something to say about it. I am not sure about him pitching in the dry air of Arizona, but we'll see. He will go against the sometimes tough, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/delgara01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Randall Delgado</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Giants over the <b>Padres</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong> was brilliant last time. I remember because I picked against him. He goes against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stulter01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Eric Stults</a></strong>, a pitcher that confuses me to no end.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Indians </b>over the Orioles</u>: I thought <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/brittza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Zach Britton</a></strong> was going to be a star. But like so many other Orioles young pitchers, he never panned out. For the O's to start him when they are fighting for their lives seems a bit dicey to me. I would much rather go with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcallza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Zach McAllister</a></strong>. Hey! Look at that! A Zach attack.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Yankees </b>over the White Sox</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sabatc.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">CC Sabathia</a></strong> has not come through for the Yankees for quite some time. He needs to show up tonight. For the White Sox' part, they give <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=johnser03,johnso009eri&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Erik Johnson</a></strong> his MLB debut. Johnson will not go deep in the game. His minors' numbers indicate that. He does not strike out people and he can be wild at times. He also gives up a lot of hits.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Nationals over the <b>Phillies</b></u>: It is really hard after all these years to pick against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hallaro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Roy Halladay</a></strong>. But his last start showed that he is not all the way back yet. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zimmejo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jordan Zimmermann</a></strong> has sort of put it back together after a rough patch and the Nats are hitting much better lately.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Red Sox</b> over the Tigers</u>: Both teams start their weakest starters in <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dempsry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ryan Dempster</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/porceri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Rick Porcello</a></strong>, so it seems the two cancel each other out. That said, the Red Sox have the better bullpen and are the home team. So they are the pick.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Cardinals over the <b>Reds</b></u>: This series has gone the Reds' way so far. I don't really know how, but he has. That said, the Cardinal bats should come alive in this one and they have a chance IF <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/millesh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Shelby Miller</a></strong> has a good game.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Royals </b>over the Mariners</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/walketa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Taijuan Walker</a></strong> looks fabulous and his MLB debut went really well. He was economical and tough to hit. But, he only went five innings and his team had jumped out with a lead. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santaer01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ervin Santana</a></strong> can hold down Walker's team for the five or six innings he will pitch and then the Royals win late against the Mariners' bullpen.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Rockies </b>over the Dodgers</u>: I cannot believe the Dodgers picked up <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/volqued01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Edinson Volquez</a></strong>. They must think they can straighten him out. That is going to take a huge iron because Volquez has been the worst starting pitcher in baseball. And his first Dodgers' start is in Coors? But the wins have stopped coming now so the law of averages has caught up a bit. All that said, it will take a great game by <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/weaveje02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jered Weaver</a></strong> to beat the Rays.</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">And the Game of the Day:</div><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Pirates over the <b>Brewers</b></u>: I am picking a lot of visiting teams today and I do not like that very much. <div style="text-align: justify;">Walk-off hits and homers, a young kid striking out fourteen batters, a tumbling catch into the seats and big hits by soon to be suspended players all went in favor of the picks and were only marred by the conspicuous failure of two former lefty aces. Only four picks went south out of fifteen. August has started just fine here at the FanDome. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=davisch02,davis-008chr&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Davis</a></strong> hit his 40th homer too, which is very cool. But he is John Lannon after all. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beachbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Brandon Beachy</a></strong>'s first outing back from TJ surgery did not go well. He will have to be a lot better today.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Dodgers over the <b>Cubs</b></u>: The Cubs continue to lose and that lineup is a lot weaker without <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/soriaal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Alfonso Soriano</a></strong>. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/samarje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jeff Samardzija</a></strong> is having a good season, but he gets no help. The scary part is wondering when this really good bubble that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/capuach01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Capuano</a></strong> is in will burst.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Rangers over the <b>Athletics</b></u>: I got this wrong yesterday and went with the A's. But since <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=cruzne01,cruzne02&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Nelson Cruz</a></strong> got to play for the weekend, the Rangers should get the benefit. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garzama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Garza</a></strong> has been great since joining them and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/parkeja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jarrod Parker</a></strong> is the A's weakest starter.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Pirates </b>over the Rockies</u>: I got this one wrong yesterday too. The Pirates have now lost two in a row! Oh no! Nah. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Francisco Liriano</a></strong> has been lights out and though <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rosajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jorge De La Rosa</a></strong> has had a fine season, the pick is the Pirates.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Orioles </b>over the Mariners</u>: I am not overly excited about the Orioles picking up <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/feldmsc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Feldman</a></strong>. I felt they could have done better. But Feldman can be okay if he gets his ground balls. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=ramirer01,ramirer02&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Erasmo Ramirez</a></strong> has won his last two starts, but does not go deeper than six innings and that bullpen is a mess.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Diamondbacks over the <b>Red Sox</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peavyja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jake Peavy</a></strong> will make his first start for the Red Sox and I predict that it will not go well. Meanwhile, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/corbipa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Patrick Corbin</a></strong> pitches beautifully every time out, even in his losses. And I like power lefties against Boston.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Indians over the <b>Marlins</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/turneja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jacob Turner</a></strong> is a pretty good pitcher, but he is no Fernandez. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcallza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Zach McAllister</a></strong> will need to pitch a good game and should be aided by the big ballpark in Miami. I am picking way too many visiting teams to win. This is scary.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Twins </b>over the Astros</u>: Like I said in his last start (which did not go well), I like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gibsoky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Kyle Gibson</a></strong> as a pitcher. He has a little more zip than most of his Minnesota cohorts. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bedarer01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Erik Bedard</a></strong> will not get much help and probably will not pitch well.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Bay <b>Rays </b>over the Giants</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/priceda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">David Price</a></strong> is a seriously good option at home. I do not think he has walked a batter since he came back from the DL. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong> should benefit from a bigger park down in St. Pete, but will not be able to match Price.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Reds </b>over the Cardinals:</u> The Reds got walloped yesterday by these same Cardinals. But I like their chances better today at home with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cingrto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tony Cingrani</a></strong> on the mound. Besides, I have no faith in <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/westbja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jake Westbrook</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Nationals over the <b>Brewers</b></u>: I had written off <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harenda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Dan Haren</a></strong> for the season and then he goes and pitches a gem his last time out. So now I am confused. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/handdo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Donovan Hand</a></strong> has been decent for the Brewers since joining the rotation. But he does not strike anyone out.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Yankees over the <b>Padres</b>:</u> I really like the way <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/novaiv01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ivan Nova</a></strong> has been throwing lately and he should be aided by Petco Park. Then again, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rossty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tyson Ross</a></strong> is the kind of pitcher that gives the Yankees trouble. This could be a nail-biter.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Angels over the Blue Jays</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rogeres01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Esmil Rogers</a></strong> has been a batting practice pitcher lately so I do not like his chances against the Angels.
