I never thought the Brewers would sweep Boston. Oh well. MLB Game Picks - Friday: October 4, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">Yesterday's playoff games went pretty much how I expected them to go. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kershcl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Clayton Kershaw</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wainwad01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Adam Wainwright</a></strong> were the aces they were billed to be and the other teams could not stay with them with their own pitchers. There was not a whole lot of drama involved.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Today could be different. There are four games being played, which is about as good as playoff baseball gets. None of the games are as clear-cut as yesterday. It will be fascinating to see what happens.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Friday's playoff picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Cardinals </b>over the Pirates</u>: This game will make or break the Pirates. If they go down by two games, it will be impossible (in my opinion) to come back. If they can win the game, anything can happen. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lynnla01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Lance Lynn</a></strong> would not be starting this game if it wasn't for his last four starts of the season when he regained his mojo. He had a real bad stretch including two poor games against the Pirates before that. So the Pirates have beat him up pretty good. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colege01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gerrit Cole</a></strong> was great down the stretch too, but the problem for me in that run was that he did not face one single tough offense in his last ten starts. That will not be the case today. I have to go with the home team here and the better offense. The Cardinals just know how to do this.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Red Sox</b> over the Rays</u>: This game is really intriguing. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/moorema02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Moore</a></strong> goes for the Rays and he pitched against the Red Sox twice this season and dominated them like few other pitchers have been able to do. He went 2-0 against them with an ERA of 1.84. He was particularly brilliant in Fenway where he is today. So why pick against him? <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lestejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jon Lester</a></strong> is 7-1 in day games. It is his best split. He is not as good against the Rays as Moore has been against the Red Sox. The Rays are on a roll and have been playing steadily. The Red Sox have sat around for a while. This will be interesting. I am going with what I perceive to be the better team at home.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Dodgers </b>over the Braves</u>: I pretty much know what <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/minormi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mike Minor</a></strong> is going to do. He will do what he always does. He has not given up more than four runs in his last ten starts. So Minor will hold the Dodgers to four runs or less for six or seven innings. The big question is what will <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greinza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Zack Greinke</a></strong> do? I have this lack of trust in Greinke. But looking back over his last ten games, he has been brilliant. Minor is a fly ball pitcher which plays well in Dodgers Stadium. Greinke has to be the pick because of his season and pitching in a spacious park.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Tigers over the <b>Athletics</b></u>: I have trouble buying into either of these teams. They can look as awful as they look good. But it is hard to forget how the Tigers flipped on a switch of sorts in the playoffs last year and just blanked everybody. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/scherma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Max Scherzer</a></strong> can do that to the A's. As far as the A's are concerned, they send <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colonba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bartolo Colon</a></strong> to the mound. How can you doubt old Bartolo? I have all season and look what he has done? He is not a fluke. But in the back of my mind is that start he has every once in a while where he gives up like four homers. So this game comes down to which pitcher can have a bad day and Colon seems more capable of that than Scherzer.</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Yesterday: 2-0</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Post season: 4-1</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Week: 14-6</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Season: 1378-1069 </div>

MLB Game Picks - Sunday: September 29, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">The penultimate day of the 2013 MLB regular season ended the last full week of picking with a thud. After a great week of picking, the bottom fell out with only five correct picks. But, you know what? I will take that since my Game of the Day and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pettian01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Andy Pettitte</a></strong> won his final regular season start of his long and wonderful career. Watching that unfold in Houston was the most amazing experience. And those who say that it was Houston, after all, and the horrible Astros, has no respect for the game. They are still a big league team with big league hitters and you still have to get them out. It was the perfect last hurrah for a great pitcher.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The regular season ends today. Or will it? The American League Wild Card is nuts. If the Indians win, they are in. If they lose and both the Rays and Rangers win, then we have a three-way tie and there will be tie-breaker games before the play-in game. If the Rays and Rangers both win or both lose, and the Indians win, then there will be a tie-breaker game between the Rays and Rangers. Crazy!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Sunday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Rays over the <b>Blue Jays</b></u>: The last battle of the Ays for the season and it could not be a bigger game. The Rays have to win unless the Rangers also lose. But they will go all out to win. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/moorema02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Moore</a></strong> is their big stud alongside <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/priceda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">David Price</a></strong>. He will take his 16-4 record and try to get the W for the Rays. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/redmoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Todd Redmond</a></strong> will try to deny the Rays. Should be exciting!</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Tigers over the <b>Marlins</b></u>: Of all the division winners, the Tigers sure can look awful at times. And they have finished the season so nonchalantly that anything can happen in this game. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Verlander</a></strong> is starting. I have no idea why or how long he will go. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alvarhe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Henderson Alvarez</a></strong> goes for the Fish.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Mets </b>over the Brewers</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/niesejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jonathon Niese</a></strong> has had a really good finish to his season. A win today would set him up nicely with good feelings for next year. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/collite99.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Terry Collins</a></strong> got a contract extension, which I guess is a good thing. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peralwi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Wily Peralta</a></strong> goes for the Brewers. Both teams go home empty-handed.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Pirates over the <b>Reds</b></u>: I picked the Reds in the first two games and was wrong as the Pirates took care of business in Cincinnati. This game is meaningless and both teams know it. As such, they are pitching two pitchers who will probably not factor in the post-season. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cumptbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Brandon Cumpton</a></strong> is better than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/reynogr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Greg Reynolds</a></strong>, so that is the direction I am heading.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Orioles </b>over the Red Sox</u>: A meaningless game for both teams, but tell that to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/showabu99.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Buck Showalter</a></strong>. He likes to beat the good teams. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tillmch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Tillman</a></strong> has not pitched well to end his season. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lackejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">John Lackey</a></strong> never gets run support. I am surprised he is starting.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Braves </b>over the Phillies</u>: Once again, I am surprised in this meaningless game that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/teherju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Julio Teheran</a></strong> is starting. Perhaps he does not factor in the team's plans for the NLDS. Anyway, the Braves win by beating Zach Minor.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Indians over the <b>Twins</b></u>: Can the Indians finish a historic run to end their season? I believe they will. A lot will depend on how sharp <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jimenub01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ubaldo Jimenez</a></strong> is. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/diamosc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Diamond</a></strong> is probably the best of the Twins' crap pitchers. A win and the Indians are in. <div style="text-align: justify;">Monday was a good day with only three incorrect picks. Which is a shame. The other two I had talked about yesterday. Two teams who had clinched, the Braves and the Tigers, lost. And I mentioned how difficult it was to pick those kinds of games. That will occur all week and the question is how sharp these clinched teams play the last lame duck part of the season.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But 9-3 is 9-3. He will beat <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/redmoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Todd Redmond</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Brewers over the <b>Braves</b></u>: Even if <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=garcifr03,garcifr01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Freddy Garcia</a></strong> has a good outing, which is stretching the imagination, young <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/thornty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tyler Thornburg</a></strong> has made quite the impression so far in his very early MLB career.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Reds </b>over the Mets</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/niesejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jonathon Niese</a></strong> is not a pushover by any means and this pick is not made without some thought. But the Reds still have a chance for the division as they are only two out with six to play. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leakemi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mike Leake</a></strong> has been solid all season.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Phillies over the <b>Marlins</b></u>: This is not a ringing endorsement for Zach Minor. He is sort of a journeyman pitcher. And his success will depend on the lousy offense of the Phillies scoring off of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alvarhe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Henderson Alvarez</a></strong>. But this feels like a Phillies win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Rangers </b>over the Astros</u>: The interesting question is not whether the Rangers will win, but if the Astros will win another game this season. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peacobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Brad Peacock</a></strong> has held his own this season, but <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/darviyu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Yu Darvish</a></strong> needs to give the Rangers a chance for a miracle. They are the only team with a slight chance to catch the Indians for Wild Card #2.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Pirates over the <b>Cubs</b></u>: The Pirates cannot let up as they are two games behind the Cardinals and the top spot is infinitely better than heading to a play-in game. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colege01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gerrit Cole</a></strong> had a bad start his last time out, but otherwise has been great. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rusinch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Rusin</a></strong> has been nothing to write home about.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Tigers over the <b>Twins</b></u>: Here we go again with a team that does not have to worry going against a team that is just playing out the string. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fistedo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Doug Fister</a></strong> goes against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/diamosc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Diamond</a></strong>, who was good his last time out.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Nationals over the <b>Cardinals</b></u>: I will be sorry to see <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/johnsda02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Davey Johnson</a></strong> go. He was a great manager during his career. And he is a good guy. This pick is for the Nats because <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gonzagi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gio Gonzalez</a></strong> is a lefty and a good lefty and the Cards have had trouble with that all year. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wachami01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Michael Wacha</a></strong> goes for the Cards and their best chance is for Wacha to match Gio and let it become a bullpen game.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Red Sox over the <b>Rockies</b></u>: The Red Sox have nothing to lose and will probably have <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lackejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">John Lackey</a></strong> just go five or six innings. They should enjoy Coors Field and I expect a high score as they should be all over <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chatwty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tyler Chatwood</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Athletics over the <b>Angels</b></u>: The A's pushed back <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/griffaj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">A.J. Griffin</a></strong> to today and still won yesterday. MLB Game Picks - Thursday: September 19, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">Wednesday was a brutal picking day. There were five extra-inning games and four of them went the opposite way of the picks. What are the odds of that? There were two blown saves, one by <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/romose01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Sergio Romo</a></strong> and the other by <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/melanma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mark Melancon</a></strong>. Both of those went against me. So that is six incorrect picks right there. The Yankees woke up suddenly and I did not expect that. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Verlander</a></strong> was terrible again and the Orioles beat the Red Sox, so that is two more incorrect picks. The Giants blew it yesterday. I look at the Mets' lineup and wonder how they ever score. Sure, Oswalt was once an elite pitcher. And he might do okay in a big ballpark. But in Colorado? Predictably, he is 0-6 with an ERA over seven. MLB Game Picks - Saturday: September 14, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">After doing this every day now for four months, the incorrect picks are starting to pile up on my psyche. And September has been particularly difficult. Teams that are fighting for the playoffs and division titles lose to teams like the Cubs and Brewers. Ace pitchers don't come through. Games are turned on one stupid pitch (like a low pitch to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/saltaja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jarrod Saltalamacchia</a></strong>--the only place you cannot pitch him) or one stupid play. Bullpens implode (hello Braves and Yankees). And when two teams out of the playoff picture play, who knows what will happen. It all gets frustrating.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The season has two more weeks to go and I will slog through it. I just hope I have a good string of days to brighten my outlook. Let's start with today:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Reds over the <b>Brewers</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hellwjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Johnny Hellweg</a></strong> has only struck out four batters in his sixteen-plus innings of work. His strikeout to walk ratio is 1:3. Oops. I will go with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/baileho02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Homer Bailey</a></strong> and those Reds better start staving off the Nationals for that last wildcard spot.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Rangers </b>over the Athletics</u>: Like the Red Sox and Yankees above, Oakland is clearly the better of these two teams. And it has been shown over and over. The only reason to pick Texas here is for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/darviyu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Yu Darvish</a></strong>. And he is never a lock to win either. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colonba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bartolo Colon</a></strong> goes for the A's.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Orioles over the <b>Blue Jays</b></u>: Picking the Blue Jays yesterday was bloody stupid. I should get my fingers pinched for that one. How cool is it that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=davisch02,davis-008chr&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Davis</a></strong> has hit 50 homers? <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tillmch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Tillman</a></strong> should win this one over <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rogeres01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Esmil Rogers</a></strong>, who is quite capable of giving up a few bombs to the O's.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Mets </b>over the Marlins</u>: The Mets and Marlins play two today. Oh goody. The Mets will win both games I think. The first features <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alvarhe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Henderson Alvarez</a></strong> and his nearly 22 second pace against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/matsuda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Daisuke Matsuzaka</a></strong> and his 26 second pace. Bring your sleeping bag.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Mets </b>over the Marlins:</u> In the second game, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=torreca01,torres008car&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Carlos Torres</a></strong> should bounce back from his last bad start and beat <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/turneju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Turner</a></strong>, who has thrown several stinkers in a row now.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Pirates </b>over the Cubs</u>: This is what should happen. There is no guarantee that it will. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=bakersc02,bakersc01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Baker</a></strong> was either lucky or very good his first start back from oblivion. If he can repeat that, the Pirates are in trouble. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colege01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gerrit Cole</a></strong> will need to be very good.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Nationals </b>over the Phillies</u>: The Nationals are trying to make a late push and have come a long way. Will they be able to catch the Reds? That is a deep long shot. The Phillies would love to foil it and they have <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hamelco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Cole Hamels</a></strong> on the mound. The trouble with that for the Phillies is that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gonzagi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gio Gonzalez</a></strong> is going for the Nats and he is peaking down the stretch.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Tigers </b>over the Royals</u>: It was a nice thought, Royals, but I don't think it is going to happen. You have to beat the Tigers and you did not yesterday. Of course, you never know with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fistedo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Doug Fister</a></strong> who goes from brilliant to putrid from start to start. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santaer01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ervin Santana</a></strong> is not nearly as good as he was in the first half.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Angels over the <b>Astros</b></u>: I would love to pick <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oberhbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Brett Oberholtzer</a></strong> just because I like typing his name. I like his name nearly as much as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/ohlenro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ross Ohlendorf</a></strong> (who won his surprise start yesterday). Even the guy on the MLB Network said that the White Sox are playing without passion or even trying. But I think tonight will be different. MLB Game Picks - Sunday: September 8, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">I could not ride Friday's success into another good day on Saturday. Less than half the picks were correct and the week ended with the tally of just three games over .500. Blech. I suppose the final tally is good news considering how poorly the week started. But you would think that I would have some sort of idea what players and teams could do after watching them for four months now.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Maybe a part of it is being a slow learner. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Verlander</a></strong> simply is not what he used to be. And yet I continue to pick him like he is. The Giants are not a World Series Champion caliber team anymore and I pick them like they are. I keep picking the Rays to win on the West Coast when obviously they cannot. It all reminds me of my former brother-in-law when he was young. After being brought before a judge after his sixth speeding incident within a six month span, the judge looked at him over his glasses and said, "Slow learner, aincha?"</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Sunday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Yankees</b> over the Red Sox</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lestejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jon Lester</a></strong> has been pitching really well and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kurodhi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Hiroki Kuroda</a></strong> has been pitching poorly after being brilliant for three-quarters of the season. But I have to pick him over <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/turneja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jacob Turner</a></strong> based on talent level.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Phillies </b>over the Braves:</u> Holy cow, the Braves sure can look awful for a team that has a fifteen game lead in their division. But otherwise, it has been really bad. Both will be tested with good lineups. You just cannot predict how it will all play out. The Cards' offense either goes crazy or goes silent. So you tell me who will win this game. Because I have no clue. The last two picks have featured four really bad teams, no?</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Brewers </b>over the Pirates</u>: I am aware that this pick did not work out yesterday. Meanwhile, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colege01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gerrit Cole</a></strong> has lost his last two starts and has allowed twenty hits in his last 13.1 innings.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Royals </b>over the Mariners</u>: This is the pick even though <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=ramirer01,ramirer02&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Erasmo Ramirez</a></strong> has been pitching well for the Mariners. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chenbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bruce Chen</a></strong> is at home where he has won over 60% of his starts for his career. I have to go with Chen with that figure.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Dodgers over the <b>Rockies</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nolasri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ricky Nolasco</a></strong> has a 5.45 career ERA at Coors Field but has won three of his five starts there. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chacijh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jhoulys Chacin</a></strong> seems like the better pick. But I am going with Nolasco and the Dodgers.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Blue Jays over the <b>Diamondbacks</b></u>: This pick just feels right. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/redmoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Todd Redmond</a></strong> looked tough against the Yankees and has pitched well overall. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mileywa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Wade Miley</a></strong> has been up and down all season. Both teams are going nowhere.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Bay Rays over the <b>Angels</b></u>: Wow, are the Rays ever slumping. They have to break out sooner or later and today could be the day. However, the last time I picked against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vargaja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jason Vargas</a></strong>, he schooled me. But, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/moorema02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Moore</a></strong> is back for the Rays. That puts the pick over the top for me.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Rangers over the <b>Athletics</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colonba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bartolo Colon</a></strong> has seemingly hit the wall after being so good most of the season. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/perezma02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Martin Perez</a></strong> just seems to go out there each start and win. I do not exactly know how he does it. These games mean a lot for both teams.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Giants over the Padres:</u> I have not had much success this season when picking <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bumgama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Madison Bumgarner</a></strong> to win. Why is that? Is he not as good as I think he is? I don't know. MLB Game Picks - Sunday: July 28, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">Yesterday was a really bad day for batters in Major League Baseball. There were six shutouts in total. <a href="https://twitter.com/dianagram/status/361326644960563200" target="_blank">According to @dianagram</a>, that was just off the single day record of eight recorded on June 4, 1972. Four of those shutouts yesterday were of the 1-0 variety. And that, according to the <a href="https://twitter.com/dianagram/status/361328285797466113" target="_blank">same wonderful source</a>, ties a record that has only occurred two other times (9/18/1915 and 9/2/2002). On the latter date of those two, there were five shutouts total. So as you can see, it was a really bad day for batters.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">And it was not just a bad day for batters either. It was also a bad day for game pickers. Let's just say the week ended with a resounding thud. We can call it a market correction. We can call it whatever we want. But one thing you could not call it was pretty. At least one of the very small selections of correct picks was the Game of the Day.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The batters and this picker can only hope that today is better. Sunday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Bay Rays over the <b>Yankees</b></u>: The Yankees are a bad team. There. I said it. Can anyone dispute it? Nevermind the won/loss record. They cannot hit. They have little zip behind them. They simply are not very good. Today, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jeterde01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Derek Jeter</a></strong> returns. Will it make a difference? Will it last?  It does not matter. They will probably get shut out by <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/moorema02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Moore</a></strong>. It will not matter what <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hugheph01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Phil Hughes</a></strong> does.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Indians </b>over the Rangers</u>: The Rangers are only slightly better than the Yankees right now. They cannot hit either. I do not care what anyone says, the A's are not that great a team. Yet, they will win this division uncontested. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/ogandal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Alexi Ogando</a></strong> loses to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jimenub01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ubaldo Jimenez</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Astros over the <b>Blue Jays</b></u>: This game is horrible to pick. The Blue Jays are another dysfunctional group. The Astros are the worst team in baseball. But <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cosarja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jarred Cosart</a></strong> is pitching well. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/redmoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Todd Redmond</a></strong> is not. I hate this pick and this match-up.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Tigers </b>over the Phillies</u>: Will the results of this series finally prove to the Phillies' GM that his team has no chance for the post season? Maybe. It should. He has only walked four batters. And yet, he is 0-3. I would pick him to get his first MLB victory today except that he is facing <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=torreca01,torres008car&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Carlos Torres</a></strong>. Torres has been lights out for the Mets since joining the rotation. I just can't. I just don't get why they do.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Athletics </b>over the Angels</u>: The bulk of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/parkeja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jarrod Parker</a></strong>'s wins have come at home. He is at home. So that seems reason enough for this pick. The second reason is that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pujolal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Albert Pujols</a></strong> is now gone from the middle of the Angels' lineup and while he was not the same, he was at least a presence. The third reason is that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hansoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tommy Hanson</a></strong> has to be really fine to win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Giants </b>over the Cubs</u>: Here I go continuing to blythely pick the Giants to win when they lose just about every day. And, I am picking <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong> to win. Egads, man! Have you no head? And <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/woodtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Travis Wood</a></strong> is a good pitcher for the Cubs. I am still picking the Giants to win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Reds over the <b>Dodgers</b></u>: This has been a fun series. These two teams might face each other again in the post season. They will be closely matched. I am picking the Reds today because I think <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cingrto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tony Cingrani</a></strong> will beat <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/capuach01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Capuano</a></strong>. But this is far from a guaranteed pick.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Rockies </b>over the Brewers</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/handdo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Donovan Hand</a></strong> is another guy who has not pitched badly and has nothing to show for it. But I do not see him succeeding today at Coors and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chacijh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jhoulys Chacin</a></strong> should get the win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Twins over the <b>Mariners</b></u>: I sort of like this <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gibsoky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Kyle Gibson</a></strong> kid. I think he has a good chance of winning today. On the other hand, I do not think much of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=ramirer01,ramirer02&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Erasmo Ramirez</a></strong> despite him getting his first win during his last outing. His team is not always going to score so many runs for him.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Cardinals over the <b>Braves</b></u>: Either the Braves have pitched really well this series or the Cardinals' lineup has hit a wall of sorts. But the Cards can break away with a series split with a win today.
