MLB Game Picks - Tuesday: October 15, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">The Dodgers surprised me last night. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ryuhy01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Hyun-jin Ryu</a></strong> was terrific, but that really should not be a surprise. He pitched well at home all season and the Cardinals simply do not hit lefties well and have not all season. And I was surprised that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ramirha01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Hanley Ramirez</a></strong> played and played well. The biggest surprise was that someone (Mattingly?) got through to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/puigya01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Yasiel Puig</a></strong> to get him to settle down at the plate. All of his at bats were good ones, even when he struck out. He was much more under control and that aided the Dodgers' cause.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I was also surprised by the Cardinals. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wainwad01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Adam Wainwright</a></strong> pitched a very good game and deserved a better bottom line if not for the sloppy defense displayed by the Cardinals. They did not get errors in the game for their misplays, but they were misplays just the same. John Jay comes under the most scrutiny as he was bloody awful in center field. Is <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/robinsh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Shane Robinson</a></strong> that much worse of a hitter? Why not give him a start out there? Granted, center field might not be Robinson's best position, but neither is it Jay's.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are two big games today. Due to the pitching match-ups, they will be very interesting too.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Tigers </b>over the Red Sox</u>: I am not convinced about either pitcher in this game. Yes, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Verlander</a></strong> is pitching. And yes, you could say, "But William, haven't you seen the way he has pitched this post season?" And that would be a great point. But the Red Sox have a better approach at the plate than most teams and Verlander did not beat them during the season. In his one game against them, he gave up four runs in seven innings. Not bad. Not great. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lackejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">John Lackey</a></strong> has been much worse on the road than he was at home. His ERA is a little more than two runs higher on the road than at home and he gave up 18 road homers as compared to only 8 at home. And yet, in two starts against the Tigers, he was pretty decent this season. I will give the nod to the Tigers at home with Verlander over Lackey, whose road splits seem more of a warning flag than Verlander's 3-4 lifetime record against the Red Sox.</li></ul><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Cardinals over the <b>Dodgers</b></u>: When I think of the two pitchers, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lynnla01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Lance Lynn</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nolasri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ricky Nolasco</a></strong>, they seem to balance each other out. Neither has had a season to write home about, especially in late stretches. Lynn has stopped having that one bad inning and instead is giving up a lot of runs spread out over several innings. Nolasco had the devil's ERA in September at 6.66. But he only gave up one homer. So maybe it was a BABIP thing where everything fell for a hit against him. But Nolasco beat the Cardinals twice during the season and had an impressive ERA at Dodgers Stadium. So maybe I am heading the wrong direction here. But then again, Lynn pitched once against the Dodgers in their stadium and was untouchable. So who knows. My gut tells me that the Cardinals will break out against a right-handed pitcher and the big boy at first base will be part of the action. MLB Game Picks - Monday: October 7, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">Both games were picked correctly yesterday though the Dodgers - Braves game did not go according to what I envisioned. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ryuhy01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Hyun-jin Ryu</a></strong> was ineffective for the Dodgers and they quickly went to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/capuach01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Capuano</a></strong>. That decision won the game because Capuano was terrific and he earned the win. The Braves, as we shall see in a minute, are now in big trouble.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Pirates also have the Cardinals on the ropes, but we shall see if the shortness of their rotation becomes a factor as they lack a shut down guy today and if the series extends, have to come back with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/burnea.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">A.J. Burnett</a></strong>, who was shellacked in his last outing.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The two ALDS games will be exciting too. The Tigers and A's are tied and the series goes to Detroit. The Red Sox have a chance to sweep the Rays but must do so down in St. Pete. Four big games today. It should be fascinating.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Tigers </b>over the Athletics</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/parkeja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jarrod Parker</a></strong> is my problem here. At times, he looks spectacular and on others, not so much. His one start against the Tigers this season was disastrous. His home/road splits do not tell us much nor do his day/night splits. I think the Tigers hit him. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sanchan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Anibal Sanchez</a></strong> goes for the Tigers and few people realize what a great season he had. His record does not pop out at you, but he is right there among the leaders in many categories. If he pitches well, the Tigers win.</li></ul><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Cardinals over the <b>Pirates</b></u>: This game completely depends on how <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wachami01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Michael Wacha</a></strong> pitches. The young stud pitcher for St. Louis has the kind of arm that can shut down anyone. But he is young and he makes mistakes. If he can limit them today and get off to a good start, the Cardinals win. If he doesn't start well, then anything can happen with the fans in Pittsburgh going nuts. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=mortoch02,mortoch01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Charlie Morton</a></strong> does not strike fear in anyone. He is a pitcher totally dependent on BABIP or where his batted balls go upon contact.</li></ul><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Red Sox over the <b>Bay Rays</b></u>: I see a sweep. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/buchhcl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Clay Buchholz</a></strong> has been unbelievable this season and if he is good today, the Rays will not get him. I questioned Lackey in Game 2, but as a Twitter pal pointed out, Lackey is better at home and if the Red Sox won, could come back with Buchholz for game, set and match. The only sticking point is <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cobbal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Alex Cobb</a></strong>, who has been amazing himself. But that amazing goes against every team except the Red Sox. The Red Sox can make any pitcher look mortal and if that offense shows up, there will be nothing Cobb can do to stop them. Cobb lost only three games this season. One of them was to the Red Sox. Overall, he faced them four times and had a 5.16 ERA against them.</li></ul><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Dodgers </b>over the Braves</u>: The Braves are in big trouble and I see the Dodgers closing out the series today. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gonzafr99.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Fredi Gonzalez</a></strong>'s decision to bring <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/woodal02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Alex Wood</a></strong> into the game as a long reliever in yesterday's game means that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=garcifr03,garcifr01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Freddy Garcia</a></strong> will start for them today. Excuse me while I pause to gag. Oh, Freddy is capable of a surprise good start. He has done it a couple of times this season. But he has given up 18 homers in just 81 innings. Yeah, that's bad. Alex Wood should have started this game and Garcia should have performed the long relief. Of course, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nolasri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ricky Nolasco</a></strong> had a great start with the Dodgers and kind of petered out as the season went along. But gosh, all he has to do is be ordinary today and the Dodgers should win.</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Yesterday: 2-0</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Post season: 8-5</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Season: 1382-1073</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>

MLB Game Picks - Monday: September 9, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">How bad is the Game of the Day feature this year when a team breaks an eight-game losing streak just to foil it? Pretty bad. And, of course, that outcome and the final outcome of last night's game of the Reds versus the Dodgers and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kershcl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Clayton Kershaw</a></strong> put a damper on what was otherwise a good picking day.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are eleven games on the schedule and some of them have great impact on the wildcard chase. Monday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Indians </b>over the Royals</u>: This is not a stunning endorsement for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jimenub01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ubaldo Jimenez</a></strong>. The only reason I pick him is that the best way to get to Jimenez is patience and the Royals are not a patient club. They are fifth in the AL in batting average, but only tenth in on-base percentage. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santaer01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ervin Santana</a></strong> has not been rock solid lately either. Big game for both.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Orioles </b>over the Yankees</u>: First, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tillmch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Tillman</a></strong> is as close to an ace as the Orioles have. Second, the Orioles are home. Third, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sabatc.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">CC Sabathia</a></strong> just cannot seem to avoid giving up five or so runs nearly every game he pitches.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Braves over the <b>Marlins</b></u>: It took <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/medlekr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Kris Medlen</a></strong> a long, long time to reach the .500 mark. But he has won six of his last eight starts and his last two in a row. As long as the Braves score a few off of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alvarhe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Henderson Alvarez</a></strong>, they should win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Reds </b>over the Cubs</u>: These are the games you have to look out for. The Reds have had two big series in a row and had a great time winning most of those games (including a sweep of the Dodgers). So you would expect them to beat the Cubs. Again, a pick fraught with danger. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/arroybr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bronson Arroyo</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/woodtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Travis Wood</a></strong> are the starters.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Angels over the Twins:</u> Jered Weaver should have little trouble with the Twins' lineup. That said, the Angels need to score some runs off of Pedro Hernandez.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Nationals over the <b>Mets</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=torreca01,torres008car&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Carlos Torres</a></strong> has been fantastic in his two starts for the Mets. He has walked only one batter in 13.2 innings. But the Mets would need to score and I don't think they will against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gonzagi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gio Gonzalez</a></strong> today. If Gonzalez is off, this pick could blow up in a hurry.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Rangers </b>over the Pirates</u>: Good golly, don't I hate picking <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/darviyu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Yu Darvish</a></strong> to win. Every time I do it blows up in my face. And the Pirates are a great team. The outcome will depend on how well <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colege01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gerrit Cole</a></strong> pitches and if the Rangers can get a lead before the Pirates' bullpen comes in and takes over.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Tigers over the <b>White Sox</b></u>: The Tigers have their hands full with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/salech01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Sale</a></strong>. But that poor bloke can't seem to buy a win with that team behind him. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/scherma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Max Scherzer</a></strong> as an opponent does not help. This will be close and perhaps <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cabremi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Miguel Cabrera</a></strong> makes the difference.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Mariners</b> over the Astros</u>: Two of my favorite young pitchers go in this one with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/walketa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Taijuan Walker</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cosarja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jarred Cosart</a></strong>. Neither have struck out as many batters as I thought they would. That should change in this game though. This is a toss up and I am going with the home team.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Rockies over the <b>Giants</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chacijh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jhoulys Chacin</a></strong> has had a good season. And the last time he faced the Giants was at home and he allowed only one hit. He got hit a bit hard by the Dodgers his last time out though. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong> was very good in his next to last start and very bad in his last start. So he is hard to predict.</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">And the Game of the Day:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><ul><li><u>The <b>Dodgers </b>over the Diamondbacks</u>: Did you know that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nolasri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ricky Nolasco</a></strong>'s real first name is Carlos? Anyway, old Carlos sure is having a good time in Dodgers' blue. He has a 1.65 in his four starts in Dodgers Stadium. MLB Game Picks - Tuesday: September 3, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">September is killing me so far. The first two days of the month have been a disaster. The only saving grace has been two straight Game of the Day picks coming in. But otherwise, it has been really bad. And it was bad even considering I correctly predicted <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hernafe02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Felix Hernandez</a></strong> would lose, the Yankees would win a game that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hugheph01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Phil Hughes</a></strong> started and that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/latosma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mat Latos</a></strong> would pitch better than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wainwad01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Adam Wainwright</a></strong>. How can some picks be that smart and twice as many be so dumb?</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Ah well, this is baseball. Today is a new day. Tuesday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Yankees </b>over the White Sox</u>: A month ago, a <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/salech01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Sale</a></strong> - <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kurodhi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Hiroki Kuroda</a></strong> match-up would have been the bomb. But both pitchers have struggled lately. I give the edge to Kuroda to figure it out in his home ballpark.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Nationals over the <b>Phillies</b></u>: Of course they Nats could not score for Strasburg yesterday. What else is new. But they will score today as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/martiet01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ethan Martin</a></strong> has been anything but airtight with his pitching. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gonzagi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gio Gonzalez</a></strong> should benefit from the support.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Tigers over the <b>Red Sox</b></u>: A lot in this game will depend on which ace is on his game as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lestejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jon Lester</a></strong> goes against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/scherma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Max Scherzer</a></strong>. Both will be tested with good lineups. I am leaning towards Scherzer at this point.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Braves </b>over the Mets</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=torreca01,torres008car&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Carlos Torres</a></strong> was really good for the Mets in his last start. He will probably be good today. But the Mets' lineup is decimated and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/medlekr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Kris Medlen</a></strong> should have no trouble getting this win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Reds </b>over the Cardinals</u>: This series and the NL Central sure is a screwy place. You just cannot predict how it will all play out. The Cards' offense either goes crazy or goes silent. They have to break out sooner or later and today could be the day. Why is that? Is he not as good as I think he is? I don't know. <div style="text-align: justify;">There were two extra inning games last night. Can you guess how many of them went for the pick and not against? Of course you can. They both went against the pick. They always do. Heck, the winning run in one of them was scored on a balk by Lord Farquhar. How is that for a creative way to blow a pick? Those two games put a damper on what had been a very good night to that point. I still finished at 9-6 so I should not complain. I predicted <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/niesejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jonathon Niese</a></strong>'s great game. All of those facts should get him a win over <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/perezma02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Martin Perez</a></strong>, who has also been pitching well of late.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Nationals </b>over the Marlins</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/strasst01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Stephen Strasburg</a></strong> calmed my fears last time with his long and effective outing. He should have no trouble with the Marlins as long as he stays away from <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stantmi03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Giancarlo Stanton</a></strong>. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alvarhe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Henderson Alvarez</a></strong> should give the Nats a few runs.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Pirates over the <b>Brewers</b></u>: The Buccos have been having some trouble up in Milwaukee. They need to win this one. If the Indians' pitcher shows up with his A game, he can shut this lineup down and strike out ten. If he gets his sinker up, then <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/maholpa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Paul Maholm</a></strong> could sneak in there with the win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Phillies over the <b>Mets</b></u>: No, I do not believe that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/matsuda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Daisuke Matsuzaka</a></strong> can win this game. It was a nice idea, Mets. But. They have gotten the job done this week against the Reds and have already won the series. MLB Game Picks - Friday: August 23, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">This week has looked a whole lot brighter since going 17-7 over the last two days with the picks. Short schedules like yesterday can be bothersome, but it was navigated with a 6-3 day. It helps when you have guys like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kershcl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Clayton Kershaw</a></strong> pitching. He is just about a lock for the CYA, it seems.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Of the three games that were incorrect, a very off-putting performance by <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Verlander</a></strong> was puzzling as the Twins hit him hard and then the bullpen did not help. The Royals got swept by the White Sox. Whuh!? And after thinking <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cainma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Cain</a></strong> was back to being Matt Cain, Cain was not Abel to get anyone out on the Pirates.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Yankees are only three and a half back now on the wildcard. Can it be? If only they could play the Blue Jays every day the rest of the way. They are now 11-1 against that club.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Friday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Diamondbacks over the <b>Phillies</b>:</u> This pick is extremely tricky. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mileywa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Wade Miley</a></strong> is pitching much better these days. The Phillies do not have any significant split against left-handed starters. So that should not be a factor. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hamelco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Cole Hamels</a></strong> is pitching as well as Miley or better. The Phillies are playing better. Ugh. The Orioles are home and they have fun there.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Marlins </b>over the Rockies</u>: This pick might be down right stupid. But the Rockies are really playing poorly. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chacijh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jhoulys Chacin</a></strong> is very inconsistent and hard to count on. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/koehlto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tom Koehler</a></strong> deserves something good to happen. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stantmi03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Giancarlo Stanton</a></strong> makes that home run sculpture dance? Am I the only person who likes that thing?</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Tigers over the <b>Mets</b></u>: The Mets have signed and are starting <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/matsuda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Daisuke Matsuzaka</a></strong> (dormez-vous, dormez-vous). That, is...interesting. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fistedo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Doug Fister</a></strong> needs to pitch well to make this pick. The Tigers seem to struggle against bad teams. We will see what happens.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Reds </b>over the Brewers</u>: Two things about this game are troubling. First, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gallayo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Yovani Gallardo</a></strong> has come off the disabled list with a bang. Secondly, despite how talented <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/baileho02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Homer Bailey</a></strong> is, he still has a losing record.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Yankees over the <b>Bay Rays</b></u>: If the Yankees can win in their own personal house of horrors, Tropicana Field, then they really are back in this race. If they cannot, then it is fools gold. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/archech01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Archer</a></strong> made them look silly earlier in the year. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kurodhi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Hiroki Kuroda</a></strong> has had a great season and needs to keep that up today.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>White Sox</b> over the Rangers</u>: Yeah, I know. In a normal universe, this should not happen. But the White Sox are hot lately. And <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/salech01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Sale</a></strong> can beat anyone on any given day if he gets some run support. He should get it with a few runs off of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/perezma02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Martin Perez</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Blue Jays over the <b>Astros</b>:</u> It is so difficult to pick the Blue Jays. They have found so many creative ways to lose this season. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/redmoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Todd Redmond</a></strong>, however, has pitched well and already struck out ten Astros in six innings the last time he faced them. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lylesjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jordan Lyles</a></strong> and his country crocodiles goes for the Astros.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Royals </b>over the Nationals</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chenbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bruce Chen</a></strong> has a .649 lifetime winning percentage at Cough-man Stadium. So this pick has a 65% chance of being correct. The other 35% depends on how well <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gonzagi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gio Gonzalez</a></strong> pitches and he has not been quite right.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Cardinals </b>over the Braves</u>: This was supposed to be a big series. But the Cards have caught the Braves with their pants down. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/uptonju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Upton</a></strong> is hurting. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/heywaja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jason Heyward</a></strong> is out. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beachbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Brandon Beachy</a></strong> is heading back to the doctor. I wonder what he will think about <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/puigya01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Yasiel Puig</a></strong>? I picture a lot of ugly faces. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nolasri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ricky Nolasco</a></strong> really mades a difference in this one I think.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Padres </b>over the Cubs</u>: Two of the most dysfunctional starting pitchers in baseball start against each other. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jacksed01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Edwin Jackson</a></strong> goes against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/volqued01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Edinson Volquez</a></strong>. Wow. Is this the island of misfit toys or what?</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Giants </b>over the Pirates:</u> I was wrong with this pick yesterday and I do not seem to have much luck predicting when <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bumgama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Madison Bumgarner</a></strong> will pitch well. But in a normal world, the Giants' pitcher is much better than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=mortoch02,mortoch01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Charlie Morton</a></strong>. <div style="text-align: justify;">Sunday was good to me as the picks went eleven for fifteen. The four incorrect picks were the Pirates who took <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lockeje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jeff Locke</a></strong> out early and then the bullpen lost the game, the White Sox as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/q/quintjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jose Quintana</a></strong> gave up a five-spot in the fifth with two homers, the Diamondbacks who were out-slugged by the Mets of all teams and the Tigers who came back with homers off of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/roberda08.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">David Robertson</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/riverma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mariano Rivera</a></strong> but still lost on a homer allowed of their own by <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gardnbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Brett Gardner</a></strong>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But it was a good day and a nice way to start off the week. There are eleven games on the Monday schedule. Here are the picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Athletics over the <b>Blue Jays</b></u>: This is one of those rare series that wraps around the weekend and they play a day game at 12:37. Weird. The A's should hit <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/happja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">J.A. Happ</a></strong> and company but <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/straida01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Dan Straily</a></strong> has to have a good game and that is harder for him to do on the road.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Rangers over the <b>Astros</b></u>: Another day game from a wraparound series. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/darviyu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Yu Darvish</a></strong> is tough to pick against, especially against a team like the Astros. My only concern about the pick is that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oberhbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Brett Oberholtzer</a></strong> is pitching very well for the Astros.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Yankees </b>over the Angels</u>: If <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kurodhi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Hiroki Kuroda</a></strong> can avoid homers to Trout and Hamilton, he should win as he has been the Yankees' best starter. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/richaga01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Garrett Richards</a></strong> is pretty good for the Angels too though.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Braves </b>over the Phillies</u>: I bet that at one time during this season, the Phillies had circled this series like it would matter. It does not as the Phillies are out of it. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hamelco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Cole Hamels</a></strong> will again be snake bit and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/teherju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Julio Teheran</a></strong> will have no trouble with the Phillies' lineup.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Reds over the <b>Cubs</b></u>: Does <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/woodtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Travis Wood</a></strong> always get the other team's ace? It sure seems like it. The poor guy will not be able to match zeroes with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/latosma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mat Latos</a></strong> and if he does, the Reds' bullpen is better than the Cubs'.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Indians over the <b>Twins</b></u>: This is a tough one. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/salazda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Danny Salazar</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alberan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Andrew Albers</a></strong> have both started their big league careers with some eye-opening performances. One of them has to win. Salazar has the better pure stuff.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Tigers over the <b>White Sox</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fistedo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Doug Fister</a></strong> cancels out <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/salech01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Sale</a></strong> and the Tigers have the better lineup and everything else. Sale is tough, but so are the Tigers.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Marlins over the <b>Royals</b></u>: I make fun of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/daviswa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Wade Davis</a></strong> all the time. I say that he is the fraternal brother to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hugheph01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Phil Hughes</a></strong>. He made a bit of a fool out of me with a big performance last time out, but like Hughes, Davis always returns to (bad) form. Going with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/koehlto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tom Koehler</a></strong> and the Marlins.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Rockies </b>over the Padres</u>: This could be ugly for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/volqued01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Edinson Volquez</a></strong> as the ballpark in Colorado will not play like the one in San Diego. Plus, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chacijh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jhoulys Chacin</a></strong> is having a decent season and knows how to pitch at Coors.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Diamondbacks </b>over the Orioles</u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mileywa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Wade Miley</a></strong> is on a roll and that is the sole reason for this pick. I simply think he will be better than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/feldmsc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Feldman</a></strong>. I am not worried about a lefty against the Orioles because their lineup is balanced. MLB Game Picks - Thursday: August 1, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">The last day of July finished a bit limply with a day just barely over the .500 mark. I picked the Yankees win almost exactly. But the Pirates' amazing sweep of the Cardinals surprised me each and every day. Pittsburgh must be jumping and rightly so. Even so, July ended much better than May and June and came in at about a 59% success rate. Not too shabby.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Can you imagine how depressing the Angels' clubhouse is right now? Holy cow. Three straight walk-off losses. What a killer. And the Indians and Royals are on fairly long winning streaks. Things are getting interesting.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are eleven games on our Thursday schedule. Only three of them are day games. Here are Thursday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Indians</b> over the White Sox</u>: The Indians have won seven straight. And for the fourth straight day, they get to play the White Sox. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/masteju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Masterson</a></strong> has turned into one of the best starters in baseball and should at least keep up with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/salech01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chris Sale</a></strong>, who cannot buy run support.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Mets over the <b>Marlins</b></u>: I praised <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/koehlto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tom Koehler</a></strong> before his last start as a guy figuring things out. And then he had a bad outing. He should pitch well against the Mets. But the Mets are starting <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harvema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Harvey</a></strong>. Sorry, Tom.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Royals over the <b>Twins</b></u>: The Royals have won six straight. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hosmeer01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Eric Hosmer</a></strong> has been terrific. The pitching has been very good. How about a sweep then? The might get a boost tonight though as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/norribu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bud Norris</a></strong> makes his first start for his new team against his old team. Jordan Lyle tries to beat his ex-teammate.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Phillies </b>over the Giants</u>: Can we stop pretending the Phillies are contenders now? A big time writer tweeted yesterday that the Phillies would end up with more wins than the Braves. Bettis was on the high prospect lists but missed all of 2012. He has the lovely combination of a high strikeout rate and a low walk rate. So he could stifle the Braves. But more likely, he will give up a couple of runs in five innings of work and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/teherju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Julio Teheran</a></strong> will get the win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Mariners over the <b>Red Sox</b>:</u> This pick is contingent on <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hernafe02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Felix Hernandez</a></strong> totally stifling the Red Sox' offense. If he does, the M's get a few runs off of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dempsry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ryan Dempster</a></strong> and get a rare win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Dodgers over the <b>Cubs</b></u>: The Dodgers had to fly to Chicago overnight for this game, which is tough. The Angels were brutalized in the late innings by the Rangers. <div style="text-align: justify;">The picks came out on top yesterday by two games. But it was a convoluted day. The Yankees came back on closer, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nathajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Joe Nathan</a></strong>, to win that game. And yet, I correctly picked the Astros to win and for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=torreca01,torres008car&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Carlos Torres</a></strong> to shut down the Braves. Griffin</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/norribu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Bud Norris</a></strong>. Norris is a very frustrating guy and any team that is considering him for trade possibilities should think twice. It is fitting that he is pitching against a guy named, A.J., because he reminds me a lot of a young <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/burnea.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">A.J. Burnett</a></strong>.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Angels </b>over the Twins</u>: As embarrassing as that loss was last night, the Angels should rebound with a win by <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/weaveje02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jered Weaver</a></strong>. He is that good a pitcher. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pelfrmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Mike Pelfrey</a></strong> won his last game, but he is no match for Weaver.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Indians over the <b>Mariners</b></u>: I want to go with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/saundjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Joe Saunders</a></strong> at home just because his rare good outings keep some contenders thinking that he can help them. Ha! But I like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kazmisc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Kazmir</a></strong> in this one in that big ballpark. I like underdog stories and I root for Kazmir. So sue me.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Nationals </b>over the Pirates</u>: I am still in shock about the Nationals' season. It simply confounds me. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/strasst01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Stephen Strasburg</a></strong> is all but forgotten this season because his record is 5-7. He team rarely supports him. He usually pitches well. Take today for example, he faces <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Francisco Liriano</a></strong> who will probably shut his team out. But I will take Strasburg on principle.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Braves over the <b>Mets</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hefneje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jeremy Hefner</a></strong> was creamed in his last outing. I mean, he was tattooed. But he will bounce back today with a good outing. Unfortunately for him, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hudsoti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tim Hudson</a></strong> will be better. But I would not be surprised if the results were the opposite.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Red Sox</b> over the Bay Rays</u>: At this point, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/moorema02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Moore</a></strong> is more reliable than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/priceda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">David Price</a></strong>. I think the Red Sox get to Price and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/doubrfe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Felix Doubront</a></strong> has a good enough day to keep the Red Sox as the best team in the American League.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Rangers </b>over the Yankees:</u> <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pettian01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Andy Pettitte</a></strong> has not been sharp for a long time. He has been decent. But not sharp. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garzama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Matt Garza</a></strong> is going to make a difference for the Rangers. He has been in this position before pitching for a contender. It was a great pickup.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Royals </b>over the Orioles</u>: Woo  boy. What am I thinking? I am thinking that I am tired of picking against <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santaer01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ervin Santana</a></strong> and him throwing gems for the last month. That is what I am thinking. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chenwe02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Wei-Yin Chen</a></strong> is a worthy pitcher. But Santana has been exceptional of late.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Tigers over the <b>White Sox</b></u>: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sanchan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Anibal Sanchez</a></strong> is better than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/danksjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">John Danks</a></strong>. The Tigers proved they can win without <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cabremi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Miguel Cabrera</a></strong>. The White Sox are a bad team.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Brewers </b>over the Padres</u>: The Brewers have to be a mess inside right now. The Braun thing must be really hard to deal with. Not to mention that the Braun thing has lost them their best hitter. But I am picking them tonight because <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lohseky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Kyle Lohse</a></strong> has been on a roll. That and I have no faith in <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/osullse01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Sean O'Sullivan</a></strong> despite his wonderful Irish name.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Cardinals </b>over the Phillies</u>: I really have no faith in <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/westbja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jake Westbrook</a></strong>. But then again, I have no faith in John Lannon. So when you have no faith in either pitcher, you pick the better team--especially when they are home.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Rockies </b>over the Marlins</u>: I keep waiting for the Rockies to bust out in their home park. Perhaps tonight will be the night. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/turneja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jacob Turner</a></strong> has been good for the Marlins though. Hmm... Okay, with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rosajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jorge De La Rosa</a></strong> on the mound, I am still going that way.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Cubs over the <b>Diamondbacks</b></u>: I am really, really torn over this one and have gone back and forth. I am going to go back to my initial instinct and pick the Cubs. It is based on <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/samarje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jeff Samardzija</a></strong> building on his great last appearance and how badly <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kenneia01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ian Kennedy</a></strong> has pitched this season.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Reds over the <b>Giants</b>:</u> Someone pinch me when it comes to how well <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gaudich01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Chad Gaudin</a></strong> has been pitching for the Giants. MLB Game Picks - Sunday: July 14, 2013

<div style="text-align: justify;">Today is the last day of the supposed first half. The first half actually ended just a little while ago. But just about everyone separates the season into before the All Star Break and after. The "before" part ends today and the only night game is at Wrigley Field, which is ironic if you think about it.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">As for me, I will get a few days of a break from game picking (I will pick the All Star Game) and perhaps I can sleep an extra hour in the mornings for a few days. That will be nice. Today and yesterday I had to get up extra early because of a golf tournament I am playing this weekend. The first day did not go well and today is just one of those going through the motion days. Oh well.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">And the picks sort of just went through the motions yesterday. In sixteen games, I only finished two games over the .500 mark. Here are Sunday's picks:</div><br /><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Indians </b>over the Royals:</u> The Royals will be glad that the first half is over as it did not go as well as hoped. I think Swisher and Santana will get to him. The pick could go to pieces if <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jimenub01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Ubaldo Jimenez</a></strong> does not do well.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Yankees </b>over the Twins:</u> This pick did not go well yesterday as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hugheph01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Phil Hughes</a></strong> did what Phil Hughes does at Yankee Stadium (give up homers). Today should feature a good game from <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sabatc.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">CC Sabathia</a></strong> and even though the Yankees will make <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gibsoky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Kyle Gibson</a></strong> look better than he is, they should win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Tigers </b>over the Rangers:</u> This pick is another that did not go well yesterday. Scherzer finally lost. But <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Justin Verlander</a></strong> should have a good day at home and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/perezma02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Martin Perez</a></strong> cannot be as good as he has been pitching.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Nationals over the <b>Marlins</b>:</u> I do not believe in either pitcher this game. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alvarhe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Henderson Alvarez</a></strong> goes for the Fish and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jordata01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Taylor Jordan</a></strong> for the Nats. It will be a BABIP game and whichever pitcher finds more gloves with his batted balls wins.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Phillies </b>over the White Sox:</u> The left-handed <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hamelco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Cole Hamels</a></strong> should be tougher on the White Sox than yesterday's two starters. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/q/quintjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Jose Quintana</a></strong> is not that bad a pitcher, but will have no run support.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Reds over the <b>Braves</b>:</u> Sometimes you have to go with a pattern even if it is not logical. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/teherju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Julio Teheran</a></strong> has not won back to back games all season. He won his last start, so the pattern says he should not win today. That is good enough for me. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cingrto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Tony Cingrani</a></strong> for the win.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The <b>Pirates </b>over the Mets:</u> <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/geedi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Dillon Gee</a></strong> will keep the Mets in the game and give them a chance to win. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colege01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Gerrit Cole</a></strong> has lost two straight, but that is because of poor run support and not a lack of good pitching. Cole will come out on top today.</li><li style="text-align: justify;"><u>The Blue Jays over the <b>Orioles</b>:</u> <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/feldmsc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.blogger.com" target="_blank">Scott Feldman</a></strong> has had a decent season. But if you look at his game log, all of his bad outings have come against good offenses like the Cardinals, Reds and Rangers. So that doesn't give me confidence to pick him today against the Blue Jays.
